Disempowered Women and Despotic Men: Food, Greed and Gender in the novels of Jane Austen
In Jane Austen’s novels, attitude to food is an important indicator of worth. In this talk, Maggie Lane looks at the way the author uses food as a commodity for showing off, for kindliness between neighbours, and as part of the dynamics of family life.

Maggie Lane is the author of Jane Austen and Food. Her other books include Jane Austen’s Family, Jane Austen’s England and Jane Austen’s World. Having co-founded the first regional branch of the Jane Austen Society in Bristol and Bath some thirty years ago, she has more recently helped to set up the South West branch, based in Exeter, where she now lives.
