| The Real Jane Austen Book Club: An Illustrated Talk by Prof Kathryn Sutherland |
| Professor Kathryn Sutherland of St Annes College Oxford explores Jane Austen as a Reader.
What might we learn about Jane Austen’s habits as a reader? How did readers come by books in Jane Austen’s day? Most were far too expensive to purchase; so different means of access had to be found. Among these were the local reading group, renting volumes and reading them in common. Jane Austen read regularly in groups of one kind or another, sharing books and opinions on them; and of course characters in her novels are often shown as group readers.
