Making the internet a place
to do business.
More and more organisations are realising that there
is potential for doing business differently using the internet.
But how?
To be truthful, it's taken those working in the
field a long time to even begin to work that out. The technology
has been there, but has needed to be configured with commercially
useful characteristics to make it of value to business.
The internet began as a kind of free-for-all common
grazing area; no properties, no prices and therefore no markets
providing information to guide innovation. Any student of economics
can cite the disadvantages of such an arrangement.
Today, the buzz word is "community" -
places on the internet to which people belong. Understanding the
idea of community and the different forms it can take is vital to
understanding how the internet is developing. Community implies
ownership, community implies service, community implies communication
and sharing of interests and building customer loyalty. Community
also offers perceived value for which people will pay to access.
Business understands all these sentiments, they are the foundation
stones of commercial enterprise.
MAINHighway
and communities
This area of our web site describes the various
types of communities which are being developed across the internet.
It also tells you what MAINHighway
can offer your organisation to implement your community,
adding value to the internet and supporting your commercial interests.
We make no apologies for making this site "busy"
with quite a lot to read. Anyone planning to take their business
into the internet arena must grasp why it is often said that "the
internet is changing everything". We believe that happens to
be true and we offer a warm welcome and a helping hand in partnership
to anyone taking on the challenges of becoming a networked enterprise.
Clicking on the Forward button below will take you
to the first description of Knowledge Communities.

The origins of
MAINHighway
Main Highway began as a project, a challenge set up
by a group of business owners and professionals in IT.
Put bluntly it was:
"How do we make the internet of value
to business and not merely another overhead?"
Over the past three years we have developed a range
of internet technology solutions to achieve that challenge. We
are now implementing those technologies across a range of communities.
We admit readily that we are having to invent as
we implement, but we also stress that our position is that of hard-headed
commercially minded entrepreneurs. We are not interested in technology
for its own sake, but in making connected companies succeed in competitive
markets.
